  • The Russell 2000 index of small-capitalization stocks rose 11.20 points, or 1.82%, to 626.30, its biggest gain since July 26. But for the month, the index is still down 3.78%.

  2. U.S. stocks rose on Tuesday after earnings from Wal-Mart (WMT:$51.02) and Home Depot (HD:$28.3100,$0.9300,3.40%) and a $39 billion takeover bid in the agriculture sector bolstered confidence in the corporate outlook.
    • Potash Corp. of Saskatchewan Inc. (POT:$143.1700,$31.0200,27.66%) Tuesday said it rejected an unsolicited buyout offer from Australia's BHP Billiton mining.
      • The offer was for 130/share, company said it would sell just that they don't plan on letting a steal occur.
  3. Medical device company Stryker Corp (SYK:$46.6900,$0.2000,0.43%) is in advanced talks to buy Boston Scientific Corp's (BSX:$5.8000,$0.3300,6.03%) pain-management device unit for about $1.5 billion, Bloomberg reported on Tuesday.
    • SYK could buy that unit for the amount listed above from BSX, if not could be a good short. 
  4. BioMarin Pharmaceutical (BMRN:$20.52,00$0.17,000.84%) is buying ZyStor Therapeutics, Inc. (ZyStor), a privately-held biotechnology company developing enzyme replacement therapies (ERT) for the treatment of lysosomal storage disorders.
    • Could be a good play tomorrow, for a short. 
  5. Information technology provider CACI International (CACI:$40.7500,$0.3900,0.97%) reported a higher quarterly profit on Tuesday on better-than-expected revenue and stood by its full-year forecast, saying it expected demand to continue.
    • Long play on this one, it came down a bit b4 close and could have upside potential.

  6. Dillard's Inc. (DDS:$19.4200,$0.0800,0.41%) announced a $250 million stock-buyback effort, becoming the latest to make such a move as cash piles reach record levels.
